FAQ's

Q: Where will we take my photos?
I am an on-location photographer. I do not have a studio, and prefer photographing in natural light, indoors or out. The location of your shoot is YOUR CHOICE. There are many options to consider when choosing a location. Local parks, Japanese gardens, open fields, farmland, or your own backyard are all suitable. Interesting backdrops add detail to your pictures. Think about unique textures and colors of buildings, and eye-leading lines of bridges, trees and shorelines. If you are unsure of where to hold your session, I can recommend some of my favorite locations, depending on the look you want. I am happy to travel anywhere within a 20 mile radius of my home.

Q: Does it matter what we wear?
Actually, it does. Wear something that reflects your personality and style! For family sessions, I do recommend color-coordinated outfits, which does not necessarily mean all white shirts and jeans. Many colors compliment each other and photograph beautifully, as do a mixture of lines, dots, solids and an occasional small pattern.  I do not require (or even suggest) that you wear matching outfits, but I do suggest that you dress with the same level of formality in mind. A parent in a shirt and jeans and a child in a formal dress may look a little funny. :) My only real preference is that you avoid white socks, (try to match pant color) and clothing with heavy lines, patterns, or logos that will draw attention away from your face. Denim and knitwear photograph wonderfully. Your clothing choice is entirely up to you, and I recommend finding something that you are comfortable being yourself in, and don't mind sitting in for short periods of time. And don't be surprised if I ask you to expose your toesies. Barefoot photos are the best. :)

Q: Can I bring wardrobe changes?
YES! I love wardrobe changes! Most of my session packages include the option for 1-2 wardrobe changes. If you are booking a session without specific wardrobe options, contact me for a custom package.

Q: Can we shoot at multiple locations?
A change of scenery can always be a good thing. :) Location changes are welcome, as long as they are within a reasonable distance from each other, usually within 10 miles. If you have locations in mind that require an exception, and time permits, arrangements can be made for an additional fee.

Q: Can we include our pet in our photo session?
Yes! I am always open to including pets in your session. Since pets can be a little unpredictable, it is helpful if a family member or friend that is not included in the session comes along to help watch them. I suggest including your pet(s) in the first 15-20 minutes of the session, so that I can focus my attention on you for the remainder of the shoot.

Q: What can we expect from our shoot?
My goal is to capture images from your real life. For this reason, I try to be an observer to your interactions with each other. Family sessions are a combination of posed and relaxed moments.
Don't be concerned if your children are shy, or may be unresponsive to me. They will be themselves with you, and that is what I want to capture. Following your child around a playground or down a forest path is one my favorite things to do.
You are welcome and encouraged to bring your children's favorite toys,  a blanket, umbrella, or any props that hold special meaning to you, or that you'd like included.

I encourage you to approach your session without pressure, and allow yourself to have fun with each other. Your feelings during your session will come through in your final images, and the most photogenic people are the ones that are relaxed and unaware of me and my camera; and aren't concerned with getting their children to look at me. (I do a pretty good job of it myself, anyway. :) We will take occasional breaks, get to know each other and give children a chance to stretch their legs.

Q: How long before my photos are ready?
Your disc of images will require a maximum of 2 weeks to develop and edit. The average is 1 week, but since 3 small children often have a way of occupying much of my time, no guarantees can be made. Weddings require 4 weeks to develop and edit. I always try to post a few "sneak peeks" on my blog since I know you're anxious!
